Large leafed cabbage-like with a white ‘curd’ or flower forming in the centre. The most finicky and difficult of the cole (cabbage family) crops to grow, cauliflower flourishes when temperatures are moderate.

Ease-of-care: Difficult-In addition to tying heads to blanch white-headed varieties, cauliflower requires good soil, timely planting and protection from pests.

Features:
Harvest in 110-155 days
Grow in seed trays, and plant out in 4-6 weeks. Sow seed at a depth approximately three times the diameter of the seed.
Best planted at soil temperatures between 10°C and 30°C.
Space plants: 60-100cm

Planting/Growing Tips:
Plant in ground when 3-4” tall – enrich soil with 1/4 cup of blood or bone meal to ensure high yields. Blanching may be required – once a head has begun to form, tie outer leaves together to shade head. Consistent watering is essential.
Heirloom organic cauliflower is a cool season vegetable that may be considered a challenge to those who haven’t learned its secrets. It is a crop that needs both correct soil and climatic requirements. However, it can be grown successfully if it is planted so that it will mature in the early summer or in the fall.
It’s also not particularly heat tolerant. They tend to fail if stressed when transplanting.
Plants have shallow root systems. Avoid even shallow cultivation. Mulch to protect roots, reduce weed competition and conserve moisture.
To preserve the white color of the curd, use string or rubber bands to secure outside leaves over the head when it is about 2 to 3 inches in diameter.
