Cotton plants grown in the home garden offer an attractive floral display during the summer that gives way to fluffy white bolls in the fall. Cotton flowers in your garden will start out with white petals and a yellow interior that gradually turns purple as the flower matures. Under the right conditions, the narrow stem of these broad-leaved plants can reach up to 6 feet tall.
Fertilized cotton flowers develop a round greenish-white fruit that is roughly 1 1/2 inches long. This fruit contains many seeds within the fluffy white material of the cotton boll. When the seed capsule reaches maturity in the fall, it splits open revealing the cotton boll.
