Planting/Growing Tips:
For succession, later plantings can be straight into the ground. Fast maturing squash varieties for summer growing. Not suitable to store like pumpkins. Usually grown to pick when young and used without removing rind or seeds.
Water well. Grow on well mulched, raised area. Shelter from strong winds. A spray with a 5gm/teasp Bicarbonate of Soda in 600ml/pint of water will help slow powdery mildew when it appears.
Mounding up small hills will create the right soil consistency and allow the soil to warm quicker. Mix in a shovelful of compost with handfuls of bone meal and wood ash to create the perfect soil environment for these heirloom seeds.Plant 3-6 squash seeds per hill. Once they have shown true leaves and grown in size, you should thin out to the 3 strongest plants.

Maintenance and care:
Black plastic mulch can speed growth, especially in cool, short-season areas. At the end of the season, remove or till in vines to reduce mildew. Use row covers to protect plants early in the season and to prevent insect problems. Remove before flowering to allow pollination by insects or when hot weather arrives.
Mulching plants helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Mounding soil around the base of the plants can discourage squash borers from laying eggs.
