Choose the right varieties and you can have lettuce almost all year round. There are so many types of lettuce to choose from – all with different colours, flavours and textures – that salad need never be boring!
There are two main types of lettuce – hearting lettuces have a dense centre, while loose-leaf lettuces have open leaves and no heart. You can also grow a variety of salad leaves that can be picked while young and tender.

Sunlight: Full sun, part shade, Yields best in full sun. Part shade helpful when it’s hot.

Soil: Requires well-drained soil, Tolerant of a wide range of soils, but prefers well-drained, cool, loose soil with plentiful moisture and pH 6.2 to 6.8. Sensitive to low pH. Lime to at least 6.0.

Water: Requires regular but well drained water.

Temprature: 45 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit

Fertilizer: Leaf lettuce needs nitrogen to grow tender, new leaves quickly, so fertilize throughout the growing season with Bonnie Herb, Vegetable & Flower Plant Food.

Harvesting: Lettuce should be harvested just before maturity. Pay attention to the leaf size. Before maturity, you can break leaves off. As time passes, you will want to cut the whole plant from the ground. Mature lettuce will go bad quickly, so check your garden everyday. It’s best to harvest in the morning before leaves have been exposed to sun. Keep lettuce in the refrigerator for up to 10 days in a loose plastic bag. Lettuce wilted? Put the leaves in a bowl of cold water with ice cubes and soak for about 15 minutes.

Care:

  • Fertilize 3 weeks after transplanting.
  • Lettuce prefers soil that is high in humus, with plenty of compost and a steady supply of nitrogen to keep if growing fast.
  • Use organic alfalfa meal or a slow-release fertilizer.
  • Make sure soil remains moist but is well-drained.
  • Retain moisture with mulch throughout the summer months.
  • Lettuce will tell you when it needs water.
