About papaya red lady trees – Frequently referred to as a tree, papaya is actually a large herb. Rapid growth of 20 feet in the first year of planting is not unheard of, in its native climate. The hollow stem of green to deep purple can grow up to 12 or 16 inches thick at the base. Deeply divided leaves of brilliant green sprout from the upper portion of the stem and can vary from 1 to 2 feet in width. Elongated melon-like fruit hangs in multiples from the stem with thin yellowish orange skin and an interior juicy sweet smooth flesh. It’s time to grow a taste of the tropics!
