Is there some magic ingredient that can prevent potted soil from getting hardened and caked up over time? An ingredient that can keep the soil loose, which in turn enables roots to spread out easily, enjoy more breathing space and aeration, and consequently achieve better plant growth? Well, the answer can be found in the humble coconut fibre, which is now being processed and marketed as Cocopeat.

Advantages of Cocopeat:

  • High water retention, up to 7 times its weight.
  • Improves physical and biological condition of soil and reduces soil temperature.
  • Improves aeration and reduces frequency of irrigation.
  • Enhances strong and healthy root system, possesses natural rooting hormones.
  • Better yield and contains natural enzymes, humus and plant nutrients.
  • Combats the fungal and bacterial infections developed from soil.
  • Can be used as soil less grow medium for hydroponics.
  • Given its acidic pH, it is ideal for treating alkaline soils.

Q: How do you mix the cocopeat brick mixture after expansion to already existing plants on the ground. Can it be just added on top or does it have to be mixed into the sol around the plants?
— Asked by Paru on August 8, 2015
A: Hi Paru. Thank you for your query. It is preferable to uniformly mix coco peat with potting soil, before planting new seeds or saplings. However, Coco peat can be directly added on the top-soil for established plants, as it will gradually decompose into the soil with time and provide it necessary aeration and moisture retention.
