Peppermint will grow almost anywhere that’s out of the hot sun, but it prefers a moderately rich soil and at least partial shade. Because it spreads vigorously by underground runners, you might want to cultivate yours in containers (at least four inches in depth) or — in the garden — in beds surrounded by boards buried about six to eight inches in the earth (they’ll help keep the mint from taking over your growing plot). When planted as a companion to cabbage — or strewn between any vegetables of the genus Brassica — peppermint helps deter the white cabbage butterfly.

Make sure the herb receives at least an inch of water a week, and to promote bushier growth, snip off the tender budding tips. If you want to assure a lengthy harvest, you should also keep the flowers pinched back but don’t pick any leaves before the herb is 10 to 12 inches high, or you’ll weaken the plant.

Q: I have brought mint seeds before, but not even a single seed germinated. How sure you are that 70% seeds will germinate? How I should sow these seeds to get best germination rate... Coco peat ? or soil with organic compost? How many seeds are there in the packet? Will this mint grow in winter also ? What fertilizer/compost I should use with mint and what pesticide (if required) ? Sorry about lot of questions but I am little crazy about my small garden.. and have not been able to get mint in my small garden :(
— Asked by Saurabh Sharma on May 15, 2015
A: Hi Saurabh! Sorry to hear about none of your seeds germinating. Since seeds are very gentle, they need constant care and right conditions to germinate. It is difficult to germinate seeds outdoors during the harsh heat of May. Seeds should be planted in balanced Potting soil (available in our Store). It is a rich organic soil containing compost and coco-peat, mixed with the garden soil. Seeds must be placed in a semi-shaded location which receives filtered sunlight. Sprinkle your seeds gently with water everyday to ensure that the top soil is moist. After about 14-20 days your seeds must have germinated. After another 2 weeks, plant the seedlings outdoors. If it is peppermint then they must be planted in semi-shade (about 3 hours of morning/evening sunlight). Peppermint seeds packet is K.G.P (kitchen garden seeds pack) variety which is suitable for most of the kitchen gardens. It must contain about 30 to 50 seeds. Mint will survive in winters if the temperature doesn't drop below 10 degrees. To protect it during winters, apply mulch around your soil. Suitable fertilisers for Mint are Panchagavya and Vermi-compost. Suitabke pesticides are Neem Oil and Clotol H.

Q: We can grow peppermint in pots
— Asked by surya on May 28, 2015
A: Hi Surya! Thank you for your query. Peppermint are one of the ideal plans that can be grown in pots. Choose a pot which is wide but not too deep, as Peppermint likes to spread and doesn't have deep roots.
